Nosotros used this recipe camping, and it was great after a long hike! Instead of biscuts, we used sourdough rolls and cutting out the centers to make bread bowls. Yum!
03/x/2009
try information technology over cornbread....AMAZING!
09/20/2005
Very good. I fabricated it at home in an iron skillet and placed driblet biscuits on top and then finished off in the oven to ensure browning. Will definitely make again!
07/24/2008
Tried this recipe twice. First time I fabricated the error of using a shallow skillet that I employ to chocolate-brown all my meat. I ran into problems when I put on the biscuits. They pushed the hat up and made them not cook as well. 2d time I used a deep frying pan and the recipe was much amend for it. It immune the biscuit to melt better. They came out somewhere between a fully cooked biscuit and a dumpling. I used a 1/ii loving cup of BBQ sauce and sprinkled the summit with shredded cheddar cheese. This is a really popular recipe now in my firm. Absolutley wonderful!!!
07/25/2005
I made it once and information technology'southward now in high demand our annual family camping trip! I cooked information technology upwardly at habitation and froze it in freezer baggies so it would keep in the cooler and and then just heated it up on the camp site. I as well fabricated the biscuits separately and so they wouldn't turn out like dumplings.
02/06/2008
My family has been making a recipe nearly identical to this ane for years. The just departure is we used a biscuit and blistering mix (such as bisquick)for the topping and when the beige mixture was browned, we would melt cheddar cheese over the top. I think I'll give information technology a try with the canned biscuits. Either way, information technology's a 5 star for me!
09/22/2005
proficient, easy, and fast. Every bit per other reviews, i mixed everything and simmered for a few minutes stovetop, then popped in the oven in a 13x9 pan afterward topping with biscuits (my biscuit tin was actually 15 oz, the "Grands" kind, hence the larger cassorole dish). Baked about 15 min at 375 then just shut off the oven and let it set for a while...too added south&P, a dash of hot sauce, steak sauce, ketchup and a picayune br carbohydrate. cipher special or exciting, just didn't claim to be...this is a not bad "I worked lated and I'yard POOPED" dinner:) first-class!
03/20/2011
This was amazing!! I used kc materpiece original bbq sauce and added more than than the recipe chosen for to, which made it more than saucy and "gravy similar" instead of just ground beef and bean mixture. I baked my biscuits according to parcel directions then they would get chocolate-brown and to make sure they were cooked through. My fiance LOVED this dish!! He made sure I saved the recipe and has already asked me to make information technology adjacent week!! Information technology was super elementary!! One affair I also added was salt pepper and garlic powder to my onion and beef mix when it was browning up, just adding a fiddling more than flavour but like I said this was amazing and easy, I loved it and will definitely be making over again!!

If y'all apply lean hamburger or venison (even leaner), and turkey bacon, it makes this repast much less fatty for those of you that are so worried almost it. I melt lean/healthy meals all the fourth dimension, am very health concious, but if I come across something that appeals to me, I arrange the ingredients to make information technology not so unhealthy. For those you who leave negative ratings because you havn't tried it, and rag on something considering it'south not healthy...DON'T EAT Information technology. It'southward that simple. Anyone knows if you throw a one-half pound of bacon into a recipe, it'south probably bad for y'all. DUH.
07/nineteen/2004
This recipe is really good. I added more BBQ sauce to brand information technology more flavorful. I also would recomend cooking the biscuits seperately to make them brown. I alive in AK. and the biscuits just don't brown in the skillet. If you similar a more dumpling like recipe then the skillet would exist okay. All in all this is 1 of the best recipes that we equally a family have had. Cheers, for sharing it with us Nickie.
08/18/2003
This reciped turned out very well. I made some big changes to suit diverse dietary preferences (used Morning Star "ground beef" and left the salary and biscuits out, which I was concerned about doing) just it was very tasty. It reminded me of a sloppy joe with a mesquite twist. It was even amend the next twenty-four hours. Cooked as it was without the biscuits, nosotros merely ate it plain with a fork, only it would exist great on buns. Thank you!
04/26/2011
Was first introduced to this recipe in a 'freezer meal' book and have never looked back. Its one we keep in family size portion in our freezer. Broil in the oven and and so top with either refrigerator biscuits or biscuit mix biscuits. To 'wow' your children, cook in a round casserole dish and cut the tube biscuits in half and adapt similar a wagon wheel earlier browning the biscuits in the oven. Then it truly looks like a 'cowboy casserole'
04/17/2011
Beingness a girl I thought this was going to be too much man food for me....I was wrong! I took a reviewers suggestion and served over sweet cornbread. I used dear flavored broiled beans. I cooked the bacon in the oven while cooking the ground beef. The taste of the meat mixture was then perfect. This would exist perfect on a cold wintertime'due south day too.
11/25/2004
I beloved this recipe...and my family loves it. It's really yummy..the bisquits add a great sense of taste to it. Plus information technology'due south a quick and easy meal to brand.
04/26/2011
It was actually proficient. I added bong peppers and celery, so at that place would exist some veggies. I may add corn with it as well next fourth dimension. I put it over corn staff of life instead of biscuits though.
01/14/2011
I take made this meal with a unlike approach..I put the bean/burger mixture into a casserole dish and height that with the biscuits and a pocket-size square of cheese on each buscuit, then broil until the biscuits are lightly dark-brown!
04/27/2011
Very tasty! I too, am health conscious, and aye, this is non a health food by any means. To me, this is ane of those once-in-a-while-fun-foods that you eat only because it tastes expert. Nobody'due south saying y'all should swallow similar this every night, just a piddling "adept for the soul food" once in a while is a must in my family.
09/27/2010
I substituted cornbread for the biscuits. I poured the batter over the height of the mixture so popped it into the oven at 350 for 45 minutes. So good. My husband LOVED it, and my daughter - who won't eat Anything - loved information technology too! If she will swallow it, it definitely rates 5 stars from me.
04/26/2011
Awesome quick dinner to make and comport out to the porch to eat when watching the dusk!
04/26/2011
Excellent! I take made almost exactly the aforementioned recipe for years except that I use hot dogs cut into small pieces. I never idea to use hamburger. Now I take two smashing "scout camp" type recipes. Cheers.
06/12/2011
I thought this was kind of banal. But it was alright. Next time I'1000 going to use Broiled Beans and more BBQ sause.
08/25/2011
I did burn the lesser of mine because I was also focused on the wait of the biscuits. I thought they would notwithstanding look like normal and I cooked it too long waiting for them to get 'done.' They await more than similar a steamed dumpling, about raw but they aren't, they are cooked through. We only used the pinnacle and heart layer of the goulash and it was great. Follow the directions and don't worry about the biscuits getting washed - they volition! Smashing for the seven year onetime as well!
04/26/2011
We dearest this at my house. I've too made this using leftover sloppy joe meat or leftover taco meat. Another thing nosotros practice is add a can of whole kernel corn. It'southward equally tasty over biscuits/ biscuits baked on elevation, or merely dig in with a fork.
03/29/2008
Hearty & delicious! I took other reviewers advice and baked in the oven til the biscuits were brown, about 20 minutes. Topped with grated cheddar and sour cream, it turned out bully! I also added some chipotle seasoning for a kick. Can't wait to go camping so we tin can effort this recipe outdoors!
04/28/2011
but OK...will attempt once more using reviewers suggestions...
07/19/2011
This was actually pretty good. Well-nigh everyone went dorsum for seconds. Next time I would apply bigger biscuits than what was called for. I baked my biscuits in the oven in lieu of in the skillet and nosotros added shredded cheddar cheese which I feel was essential. Besides, I cooked my bacon in the oven while the hamburger was browning to save on time. Give thanks you lot for sharing this recipe!
05/14/2011
This was incredibly delicious! I followed the recipe exactly and it turned out neat. Volition definitely make again.
04/09/2010
The 23 people I made it for didn't manage to leave me any. They said it was great! :) I'll accept to brand it just for me adjacent time..
04/26/2011
we used Bisquick and put in the oven to cease them off. The meal was skilful but don't think it was a do-over for us. The biscuits fabricated information technology dry.
04/26/2011
Mmmmmmm!!!!! Scouting food!!!
08/13/2011
My husband and I really enjoyed this casserole.
04/28/2011
This was great and so quick and piece of cake. A few changes I made according to our gustation...since we don't eat baked beans because of the sugar, I used 1 can of pork and beans and i can of chili beans. I also added sliced sweet peppers and crushed garlic cloves with the onion. Then I placed the biscuits on summit and finished in the oven co-ordinate to biscuit directions. I recollect next fourth dimension I may try adding chopped or sliced jalapenos or green chilies.
09/12/2011
We couldn't notice seven.v oz. refridgerated biscuits, so,ended upward getting 12 oz. biscuits instead. The meat mixture tasted great, but the biscuits didn't seem to get done as fast. you may want to purchase 2 rolls of bicuits if yous buy the 12 oz. ones.
12/15/2011
My hubby and I both liked this recipe. I didn't cook the biscuits with the meal, but made cornbread instead which worked perfectly! Easy to make. Reheated the leftovers several nights later and was all the same tasty.
01/thirty/2011
I've been making a much more complicated version of this recipe for 15 years and information technology is always a huge success. My recipe calls for pork sausage instead of ground beef. Very hearty
04/26/2011
We added cubed velvetta cheese. I makes it kinda creamy.
02/sixteen/2012
This was ok as written. My oven broke and I needed a recipe to melt on the stovetop. This put a check in the cake, that was about it. I made it as stated, only added some grated cheese on top.
05/19/2011
I was looking for something different to do with footing beef other than meatloaf and pasta, and this was information technology. I cooked the bacon in a big frying skillet, calculation brownish saccharide to both sides, then tuckered of grease on paper towels and diced up into small pieces and set bated. I drained the salary grease and browned the footing beef in the same pan. I seasoned the beef with garlic powder, onion powder, chili powder, paprika, worcestershire, soy sauce, a dash of ranch salad dressing, a dash of Frank's Red Hot sauce, and a nuance of Kickin' Cajun jalapeno hot sauce. I used one tin can of Ranch Style beans, considering that's all I had, and I mixed them up in a small bowl with about 1/2 cup Jack Daniels Hickory Brown Sugar bbq sauce, 1/3 loving cup ketchup, two tbsp honey, 2 tbsp brownish sugar, 1 tsp liquid fume, garlic powder, onion pulverisation and chili pulverization. I poured the beans over the browned footing beefiness, covered the skillet and simmered on low for about 30 minutes (mostly because I was waiting for my hubby to get abode from work). When he got dwelling house, I tossed in the brown sugar "candy-coated" bacon considering I didn't desire it to go soggy. Served over corn bread instead of biscuits. My hubby liked it a lot, and so did I. Delicious, simple, and a suspension from the same old same footing beef! =)
05/13/2004
My wife establish the recipe on the heavy side simply my kids and I liked it.
12/21/2006
My husband loved this dish. I added garlic, actress barbecue sauce, about 1/2 cup, and cooked it all in a skillet earlier transferring to a baking dish and topped it with the biscuits and some cheddar cheese. I baked information technology at 350 for 15 minutes to go the biscuits nice and brown. Will definitely be making this recipe once more!
11/09/2008
This was a very good bivouac cooking recipe. For footstep ane, I used the stove top; then for step 2, I cooked it over a campfire in my dutch oven (using coals). The just alter I made is that I cooked it about 25 min after adding the biscuits. The biscuits were cooked perfectly (coals under and on top of dutch oven).
06/22/2010
Yep, it was an excellent casserole! My kids loved it, didnt change it except for the rolls. We dont have pre-made rolls here, just we practise take croissants. Covered the acme with that dough in a lasagna dish and it tasted astonishing! Kudos for you for this ez recipe, a truthful kid pleaser!
eleven/08/2011
anybody loved this one. the simply thing I would change is the corporeality of bbq sauce. I would add together between one/2 and 3/four cup. yummy............
04/17/2012
This was super-yummy! I made it ahead of time and reheated it over the camp stove. I also took 1 reviewer's proposition and served information technology in sourdough bread bowls which was not simply delicious, merely less messy too. Thanks!
08/09/2011
My family liked this! I didn't have the biscuits on hand, but instead served it with rosemary focassia breadstuff and green beans. I made it mid-afternoon then put information technology in a slowcooker on "warm" and then it would be ready for the states at dinner time. We volition practise again!
09/19/2010
I baked the biscuits dissever, but may go ahead and cook them on top adjacent time. I also added about 4 oz sharp cheddar to the "stew" which thickened it up even more. ETA: I tried the biscuits in the skillet and liked it. Nonetheless, I had to cook it longer than 10 min. I had the Grands, so maybe smaller ones would cook quicker.
07/05/2011
This was large striking with my family unit, and it'due south a prissy comfort food repast! I took the communication of others and baked my biscuits separately, and and so spooned the beans and meat over superlative. I did add in a parcel of brown gravy mix and some water to make it more of a gravy.
05/02/2011
Yum! And then piece of cake and good!
05/12/2011
This is one of the all-time recipes I've establish on this site!
08/17/2011
This is fantastic! We've pre-made it, froze information technology and and so took it camping; or made it from scratch right at the campsite. I've even made it in the ho-hum cooker by making homemade baked beans and adding the other ingredients along with in in the tedious cooker. All versions are well-loved and frequently requested by my family unit of 6 -- especially by the kids!
12/16/2006
Skilful. Added mustard, worchershire sauce along with the bbq sauce. Had with cornbread. Will make once more!
05/05/2011
This is a family favorite at our firm! The just change I made was after putting the biscuits over the top of the beef mixture, I put the skillet in the oven to bake until the biscuits were browned and washed. I also similar to sprinkle a little shredded cheddar cheese over meridian of the biscuits towards the terminate of the baking fourth dimension. Non a fancy meal, by whatsoever ways, but a quick repast that makes everyone happy!
09/xi/2010
I just made this tonight, and information technology's a keeper with my modifications (I tasted it before mods and it was very banal). First I fried the salary and added the bacon grease also, I also added chocolate-brown sugar, ketshup and mustard (to taste on all). This is not at all healthy only it is wonderful! I put it in a baking dish topped with refrigerated biscuits and baked it for 20 minutes. I really think the BBQ sauce was wonderful, but you lot MUST use Sweet Babe Rays, information technology's the best! Delious and filling!
11/twenty/2011
This was very skilful and simple. had a great taste to it.
04/13/2011
Very like shooting fish in a barrel and very tasty. My family raved near it. I don't take a dutch oven and then I merely used a regular pot. Worked out just fine. The biscuits I just cooked in my conventional oven. Easy and simple for me. I will for sure brand this ane once again!
11/09/2010
Heard about this recipe from my sis, tried information technology for the first fourth dimension tonight and it was a full hitting with my family! I served it with onion rings. Definitely a new family favourite!
eleven/28/2011
Not bad quick easy dinner! Only alter was I made homemade biscuits and baked in oven considering I didn't take whatsoever canned biscuits.
03/10/2009
I really wanted to like this recipe. It sounded like a great week night, fix it fast recipe. However, to my family, it just tasted like beefed up baked beans. It was proficient and I would definitely serve it as a side dish at a picnic or potluck, but didn't hit the spot for us for a dinner detail.
12/xv/2016
I won't be making this again. My married man and I both recall information technology tasted just similar hamburger in broiled beans like a couple of other reviewers. The biscuits did not become completely done with extra cooking time allowed.
12/22/2010
This was fast, easy, and my married man loved information technology. I used pre cooked bacon, Sweet Baby Ray'southward BBQ Sauce, 1 can of pork and beans, and onion powder instead of fresh onion. I baked my biscuits in the oven. This made a nifty meal with pantry staples.
08/15/2011
I was looking for a quick and like shooting fish in a barrel recipe for camping and this was a hit. I made information technology at home so reheated over the fire in an aluminum pan (no cleanup!) and baked my biscuits separately. In one case warm I served over biscuits nosotros toasted over the fire. Fabulous! Nosotros had a side of sweetness corn grilled in the husk and it was a perfect cowboy dinner. I may even brand this at home on occasion.
05/19/2011
We've made some stuff similar to this for years just the bbq sauce really makes it and my two boys ate it correct up. That e'er works for me.
10/02/2011
this was really adept. added a little more bbq sauce for taste. son went dorsum for seconds (which rarely happens).
04/03/2010
Surprisingly this was a pretty expert recipe that got 5 stars form my family. I wasn't expecting it to be as good as it was and it is a frequent asking in our firm now!
05/xv/2011
This recipe was absolutely delicious - hubby & sons loved information technology! I did add some garlic & most a tablespoon or so of brown sugar - really put information technology over the acme...I also made the biscuits in the oven and so they would brown...yous really desire to try this.
06/05/2011
That's some good eatin right at that place! Yes buddy.
09/thirty/2005
This is quite similar to a recipe I got from my Mom's cookbooks....Western Style Beef and Beans.Information technology's basically simply double this recipe only without the barbecue sauce. The sauce in this was a dainty bear upon.Instead of using refrigerator biscuit dough I fabricated my own biscuits by hand. For such a simple recipe I was quite surprised on how well information technology turned out to be.I'll be making this again.
02/01/2017
It turned out alright, but the recipe is overly vague most the biscuits, and for some reason it comes up as a baking dish fifty-fifty though it's seemingly prepared entirely on the stove pinnacle. Information technology wasn't a bad dish, simply it felt like it could have been a petty more savory. Perhaps a little more BBQ sauce? Or a sprinkling of red pepper flakes or something?
07/28/2011
This was such a smashing meal idea, my family loved information technology! I did do a few changes i used cornbread instead of biscuits and also had rice as some other alternative I accept a lot of picky eaters hither! Only information technology turned out cracking! I likewise added suage links cut up small!
09/29/2005
On a wet, blustery evening like this ane, this dish really hit the spot, fifty-fifty without biscuits which nosotros forgot. Information technology is everything we wanted in a "quick-after-soccer-practice" repast. Information technology'll be a regular week dark meal for us.
04/03/2012
This was very good! I did follow some of the other reviews though. I added salt, pepper, garlic, basil, oregano, and chili powder to the ground beef. I as well used ii/3 cup of bbq sauce for extra flavor. I served it over corn bread that I made separately. My kids didn't like it merely they aren't a fan of beans or corn bread. My husband and I idea it was yummy! It would too be good served over mashed potatoes or rice. I may effort that in the future to see if the kids volition like it better.
02/07/2012
Excellent recipe. I did have to cook information technology a lot longer than stated to get the biscuits cooked all the mode through (did it on the stove top, similar in the recipe). I used canned maple beans and it was a bit too sweet, and then side by side time, I volition endeavour BBQ beans.
07/07/2010
This is definitely delicious and a keeper. My man LOVES this recipe and asks for it past proper noun often. I use only 1 tin of beans, for u.s.a., two was likewise many! I used ane can of brown sugar baked beans, and dark-brown sugar and maple BBQ and it was Groovy! As well I prefer to cook biscuits or cornbread seperate from the dish and just spoon the goulash over it. It'southward and then easy and and then adept.
02/eighteen/2019
It turned out great, except the biscuits were not fully cooked after 15 minutes. Adjacent time I volition broil the biscuits in the oven.
03/xi/2009
I thought this was yummy and a cracking improver to my ground beef repertoire. I added some extra seasoning/bbq sauce to perk up the baked beans and substituted turkey bacon and homemade cheddar biscuits for the canned. I am excited to take this recipe camping when summer rolls around.
01/29/2012
DELISH! I brand this all the time. At least one time a week! I prefer to utilise flavored baked beans, i.e. Smokehouse Tradition or Bourbon & Brown Carbohydrate, to proper name a few. I tend to leave the biscuits on a little longer so they become more similar biscuits instead of dumplings. Bang-up either way!
03/18/2009
My husband LOVED it. Nosotros served this over mashed potatoes. Turned out peachy!
01/07/2006
Wow this recipe brings dorsum memories. I don't really eat this kind of food anymore, but it reminded me of when I was a kid and we went to the rodeo cook offs when the trail riders came in. They would brand foods like this for anybody to endeavor. I had mixed reviews from my guys that I melt for. I think its because we don't swallow foods like this. One loved it and the other not besides much but loved the biscuits from the top. I took i reviewers suggestion and made the meat part on the stove and transferred it to a 9X13 dish, put grands biscuits on summit, using cooking directions on buscuit can. It came out great. Thanks for the memories.
05/14/2011
Volition exist using this recipe at the annual camping trip this twelvemonth!!

very practiced, feancee loved it, wants me to make again
08/28/2013

04/28/2011
Easy to brand and something to surprise a cowboy with!
06/15/2009
I made this on a camping trip last weekend. Everyone in our grouping of x LOVED it! They all (even the sis & mother- in-police) ranted and raved near it! We made it in our cast atomic number 26 dutch oven in the fire. Neat Flavor. I subbed Cheddar black pepper rolls that we made into bread bowls instead of the biscuits. Very handy & Fast! I doubled the batch and used honey salary. Next fourth dimension I will apply a thicker saltier salary & spicier BBQ sauce to enhance the flavor. Definate keeper!
01/27/2012
so easy and yummy!
03/31/2009
Fabulous recipe. Extremely unhealthy, merely residual it out with a salubrious meal the next 24-hour interval and you lot volition be okay! It was crawly. I baked the biscuits separately as suggested and only used one tin can of pork beans considering that is all I had and it turned out great!
03/30/2009
I used basis turkey and turkey bacon for a little healthier version. I also added black pepper seasoning table salt and used sweet baby rays bbq sauce. This turned out really good!
09/18/2006
So-kay. Kinda bland, simply leftovers were good for luncheon with cheese wrapped in a tortilla.
08/15/2011
I was looking for a quick and like shooting fish in a barrel recipe for camping ground and this was a hit. I made information technology at domicile and so reheated over the fire in an aluminum pan (no cleanup!) and baked my biscuits separately. In one case warm I served over biscuits we toasted over the burn. Fabulous! We had a side of sweet corn grilled in the husk and it was a perfect cowboy dinner. I may even make this at home on occasion.
04/12/2012
Delicious, hearty meal! My married man loves it. I like to experiment and switch out the baked beans for Bush-league's Grillin Beans. There are many differently flavors and they all taste delicious!
05/01/2011
Made this terminal dark for dinner, turned out great very fast and easy. Did my bisuits separately in the oven, served information technology over the biscuits. Total hit, even invited my parents and they loved it too. Volition add together to our dinner carte du jour.
09/xxx/2005

07/01/2009
I made this prior to a Boundary Waters trip to cheque out how everyone would like it. It was wonderful Making it today for 10 to freeze and accept on the trip.
03/31/2012
This was good. If you lot similar baked beans and bbq sauce, and then you can't go incorrect. I made the biscuits in the oven, split them and and then poured the mixture over them. (I'm not a dumpling, gooey biscuit person!)
09/29/2005
Very tasty and like shooting fish in a barrel to make. I did bake the biscuits separately in the oven and then spooned the meat/bean goulash over them at the table. My DH, two teenage boys, and ii twelvemonth. sometime dtr. all enjoyed it.
06/20/2011
This should have been chosen Circus Cowboy Casserole. It's definitely a kid'due south recipe. Camping ground fare through and through, it couldn't get any worse if it fell into the fire. I'd rather skip this and curl up in my sleeping purse with a belly full of smore's.
05/01/2011
I made this for my family. I have 3 very picky eaters, just this was a hit with them! I have added it to our dinner rotations. It's pretty simple and the kids tin aid out with it!!
